The railways minister Mamta Banerjee polled 49% of the votes against Buddhadeb's 20%. About 38% voters said they preferred another term for the Left, but 53% said they favour change.
In 2011, the ORG opinion poll predicts that the Left will get 43% of the vote share, 44% for Trinamool and allies and 12% for others.
