DMK MP Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar were on Friday arrested by the CBI after a Delhi court denied them bail in the 2G spectrum scam case.
Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP and daughter of former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi, and Kumar had been chargesheeted by the CBI for allegedly conspiring with former telecom minister A. Raja in the 2G scam.
Both will be taken into judicial custody and sent to Tihar Jail, where Raja is lodged ever since his arrest.
Kanimozhi and Kumar had appeared in court in the morning and were told that the decision on their bail pleas would be made after 1 pm. The hearing was then adjourned till 2.30 pm.
Kanimozhi had also been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act over Rs 200 crore allegedly routed to the DMK-owned Kalaignar TV from Shahid Usman Balwa's firm DB Realty.
Kanimozhi and Kumar hold 20 per cent stakes each in Kalaignar TV while Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal holds 60 per cent.
Kanimozhi's arrest is a big blow to the Karunanidhi family, which has been at the receiving end of the 2G spectrum scam probe. Their party, the DMK, was routed in the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, with corruption being considered as one of the reasons for the defeat.
