Aishwarya Rai started off badly, picked it up in the middle and now after ten long years, just looks too damn tired to care. Well, she was the first one who put the till date often mispronounced Cannes film festival on the Indian media map. Her wardrobe disasters, practiced poses, perfect bytes on the Cannes red carpet all compose a big section of her career and celebrity.
Ten years on, Aishwarya Rai still has it in her to keep everyone enthralled. We look back at the long red carpet journey and charts the growth of an international brand and a struggling fashionista.
When in 2002 she was first invited to the Cannes for her movie Devdas, she had reasons to be excused for her dreadful heavily embroidered sari and the over dramatic gold necklace. It was her first time representing the country at such a platform and one could only wish back then that her looks will improve.
In 2003, she wore a hideous green sari by designer Neeta Lulla, gold jewellery and upswept hair is her biggest is her biggest fashion letdown at Cannes til date.
In 2004, the ghastly white gown by her then favourite designer Neeta Lulla didn't impress either.
It was after all, for the first time, we were seeing one of our own being dressed by big international names in the best of their couture. Finally, she managed to appear on the trendiest celebs at the Cannes in 2005 when her floral gown was a refreshing change from her predictable over the top heavily embellished outfits.
The body hugging navy blue gown by Elie Saab in 2006, where her makeup got better, she got rid of the upswept hair and ditched saris for gowns.
In 2007, marriage seemed to work rather well for her on the red carpet as some of her best Cannes sightings were alongside hubby Abhishek. Even with all her faults, there is something about her that makes her a red carpet darling.
The fuschia gown in 2008 by designer Roberto Cavalli worked well for her along with her hubby by her side.
Over the years, it's been a good sign to see the heavy gold jewellery replaced by elegant diamond pieces and the blingy tasteless gowns to be swapped with classier ensembles but Ash plainly looking flawless for once has often eluded the diva.
In 2010, she was back to her disappointing self in a shimmery Armani gown with her hair tied up, looking all too fierce for the day.
In 2011 she is wearing a stunning Armani Prive dress. It was not so much the gown that didn't work, but more her unforgivable flab, predictable hair-do, flaky make-up and mismatched accessories that have failed her.
