Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran and put the onus of removing him on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"With regard to Daya's (Dayanidhi) case, I am quite sure the prime minister knows what is to be done and am sure he would do it. The prime minister should ask for Dayanidhi Maran's resignation from the Cabinet. I'm sure the prime minister will do it if he has not already done it. So, Mr Maran should resign and face legal proceedings," Jayalalithaa said.
Jayalalithaa targeted Maran for his alleged role in the takeover of mobile operator Aircel by Malaysian company Maxis Communications during his stint as telecom minister in the UPA-I government.
The AIADMK leader's demand came a day after its former Tamil Nadu ally BJP attacked Maran and Singh over the minister's alleged role in the issuing of 2G licences to Aircel.
Maran has denied any wrongdoing. The DMK leader claimed he had never deliberately withheld the application of Aircel for licence and spectrum. He refuted the allegation that the delay was made to pressurise Aircel to sell off its stake to Maxis Communications.
